"THE REFERENCE"

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT - Spring 2010

Greetings,

First and foremost I wish to thank the MSET membership and board of directors for entrusting me with the responsibility to lead MSET onward and upward for the next few years as president. I would also like to acknowledge my parents who have tirelessly supported and encouraged me to always “be the best and never settle for less.” Each of us has a different ideal of what is their “best” is but we must continually strive to attain our goals and never give up, even when (and it will) the “going gets tough.” My work ethic is the result of growing up with a whole slew of siblings and a whole bunch of work to get done. From this I learned a lot about conflict resolution, hard work, and that it really is NOT all about me!

I also wish to thank Dr. Verne Hulce who held everyone else to his own impeccably high standard of excellence; he will forever be an icon to me in the pursuit of knowledge. He taught me an awful lot about humility, respect, and perseverance. Upon obtaining my first ABRET credential, I was so pleased with my accomplishment and thought that now I can surely impress everyone with how bright and accomplished I was. Well… following my grand announcement to Verne (my boss) he just grinned sheepishly at me and said, “well... that’s great Mary, now you can begin to focus on getting the R. EP T.” WHAT!!! I thought surely he had not heard me correctly (he was legally deaf). So, to prove my worth and not wanting to turn down the challenge, I steadfastly began to study for the evoked potential board examination. Upon successfully passing the R. EP T.  exam I smugly thought that now… finally I’d reached the pinnacle of success. Well… this was again met with a hearty congratulations but quickly followed by, “well, better start working on those EEG boards now!”

Thanks to Verne I’ve learned that there is no "absolute" pinnacle of success, the pursuit of knowledge is a lifelong adventure and it may very well be one of life’s most humbling experiences. It isn’t until we begin to learn about a subject that we can truly realize just how infinite the quest for knowledge and enlightenment truly is. Just ask any parent of a teenager, these kids already know everything! Ask any centenarian and they’ll surely tell you how much more they have to learn!

I also want to acknowledge those that have inspired me to pursue excellence in my career, especially my mentors Larry Head and Connie Kubiak for their unwavering encouragement and support.
Without Larry’s confidence in my abilities, could never have mustered up the courage to stand up and give my first presentation. And Connie’s dedication to MSET and commitment to excellence in everything she does is an inspiration to us all. Also to Greg Miller who is always there to pull me out of trouble and lend a hand whenever I get myself into a bind (quite often).

I challenge each of you to make a commitment to excellence and seek out opportunities every day to gain knowledge and attain new skills.

Respectfully,

Mary Harvey, R. EEG/EP T., R. NCS T., CNIM
President-Elect, MSET
